Guided Tour of Napoleon’s Légion d’Honneur : History of the museum

The Ordre de la Légion d’Honneur is a French institution in charge of rewarding the citizens who desserve it with the highest French distinction. This Order was created by Bonaparte on the 19th of May 1802. It rewards the soldiers, but also the civilians.

The Légion d’Honneur museum is dedicated to the history of the French and foreign orders. Located in the Salm hostel, it was created by the general Dubail, who was “Great Chancelor of the Légion d’Honneur”. The museum was financed by the donations of the « légionnaires » (and among them many Americans). It was open to public in 1825.
